Book Club
For our March meeting, the SWIC Book Club met at Dragon Club in Shekou.
Dragon Club is a book café with a variety of books to read and borrow for children to adult readers. In addition to being a book café it is also a space to read, organize events like movie nights, delve into arts and crafts, explore new foods with cooking classes, and relax with playing board games. During our meeting, we shared wonderful snacks and wine from Dragon Club.
The Book Club’s book this month was Trevor Noah’s “Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood”.
It is an autobiographical comedy book about Trevor’s childhood in South Africa during the apartheid era. The Book Club discussed the topics of race, identity, belonging, domestic violence, and language being a connecting device to others. In between these relatively deep topics, the Book Club also experienced joy and connection among the members who themselves are from a variety of countries, speak a multitude of languages, and connect with each other during these conversations. During our time together we share our reactions to parts of the stories, ask questions, and make connections in our lives to the events in the book.
As it goes when one reads a good book, we get lost in the pages and ignore the noise from the real world. These Book Club meetings have the same effect for its participants.
